It’s been a few days since we put out My Time At Portia Alpha 1.0, and the responses from players have been very helpful. We’re now much more confident in our approach to the gameplay than before. We’ve already moved on to the next build, which is due later this month, still free. In the next several postings over the next few weeks leading up to the release, I’ll be addressing what we’re working on.

This time, I’ll be talking about the characters. As everyone probably noticed, a lot of the current NPC models are temporary. Mars’ model was used as Presley, Dr. Xu, and Paulie, causing some confusion. Emily’s was also used as Ginger’s. Well, well, not anymore! Check these out:

We’re debating whether we should keep or get rid of the names of the NPCs above their heads when the player gets close, on one hand, it’s really convenient, on the other hand, it does break the illusion somewhat. What do you all think? Our NPCs are detailed and different enough that they’re easily recognizable, but we don’t know if players can take the hassle. We’re also looking to change the clothing design of Nora and Minister Lee. The Church of the Light is more similar to Taoism, so their clothing designs should be much simpler. High quality looking, but simple. On the animation side, we plan to add in some distinct character animation for all the characters, you’ll see a lot of these in the next build.

Finally, many have asked about the basic female player character, while she won’t be in the next build, we have started working on her. Here’s what her concept looks like.

Personally, I like the names over the heads. It’s not visible from a distance, yet when I approach someone it pops up allowing me to confirm if I really have the right character or not before I speak to them. Seems perfect to me.

Doesn’t seem to break immersion either; it’s a cartoon world so I don’t expect it to follow all the rules of a normal world.

I honestly don’t think it matters either way about the names above the head. Could be option?

Man, I already love this game! I don’t really have anything left to do in a1.0, except expand and stock up. As for the names, they don’t bother me. Is it possible to make a toggle for them in settings? Really the only ‘faults’ I could see in the game were interface based. Even those are minimal and mostly subjective. Honestly, I just need to see more content to really get suggestions flowing. So, it’s great to see more is coming! Right now, I think I’d just be making a wishlist – much of which you will likely have in the game as time goes on. Spectacular work thus far!

I can’t wait until the female MC is added!
As for the names, I think it could always be an option. I think each character is unique enough that it would work without the names but they names can be nice, especially in the very beginning when you are first meeting them.

I think the names over the head would be a great idea. You could also add an option to turn that feature off in the settings if you got tired of it. That way everyone gets what they want. Although I do imagine that would require quite a bit more work.

One thing I would like to mention is that when you look at the characters screen it just tells you their name, face, and number of hearts. I think it would be nice to add in descriptions of who the people are, like the descriptions you get when you meet someone for the first time.

I do really love the game so far, and it has great potential. I am excited to be along for this ride.
